Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi welcomed Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Cairo on Sunday to discuss deepening bilateral cooperation and regional security. At a joint press conference at the Presidential Palace, el-Sissi emphasized Egypt’s commitment to Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, warning that any recognition of secessionist claims would violate international law and threaten stability across the Horn of Africa.

President Mohamud highlighted the shared responsibility of African and Arab states in maintaining peace in the region, noting the strategic importance of the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Aden for neighboring Arab countries. The leaders also discussed Egypt’s planned participation in the African Union Mission in Somalia, announced in 2024, and enhanced collaboration on counterterrorism initiatives.
