Benin Celebrates Vodun Days with President Talon Attending Opening Ceremony

The sacred Kpassè Forest in Ouidah, Benin, came alive this week as the country launched its annual three-day Vodun Days festival, celebrating the nation’s spiritual and cultural heritage. President Patrice Talon attended the first day of festivities, greeted by cheers from thousands of visitors. He was accompanied by Romuald Wadagni, Minister of Economy and Finance and presidential candidate for Talon’s party in the upcoming April elections.

The president watched traditional Egungun mask parades at Maro Square, a highlight of the festival, before leaving the venue. Vodun, an animist religion emphasizing the forces of nature and ancestral connections, is deeply rooted in Beninese culture. Vodun Days, officially named in 2024, attract tourists and practitioners from across the globe each January, showcasing rituals, music, and dances that reflect centuries-old traditions. The festival not only honors Benin’s spiritual heritage but also promotes cultural tourism and awareness of local traditions.
