South Africa Joins French Probe into Ambassador’s Mysterious Death

South African authorities have dispatched a team of elite investigators to Paris to assist French police in probing the sudden death of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa, whose body was found in the inner courtyard of the Hyatt Regency Hotel after a fatal fall from the 22nd floor. The 58-year-old diplomat, a former police minister and long-time ally of ex-President Jacob Zuma, was reported missing by his wife a day earlier after she received a distressing message in which he appeared to express suicidal intent. French prosecutors confirmed that a note suggesting self-harm was recovered, though investigators have not ruled out foul play.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said five seasoned South African officers will collaborate closely with their French counterparts “to ensure a transparent and credible investigation.” Mthethwa’s death has shocked both diplomatic and political circles. Though respected for his years of public service, he was also a controversial figure. He oversaw the police during the 2012 Marikana massacre, in which 34 striking miners were killed, and was recently named in testimony before the Madlanga Commission, which is examining political interference in policing. Authorities say Mthethwa’s family is awaiting formal clearance for his remains to be repatriated to South Africa. The investigation continues as questions mount over the circumstances leading to his death.
