Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Head Holds Talks in Riyadh Amid Ongoing Conflict

Sudan’s transitional Sovereignty Council president, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, arrived in Riyadh on Monday for high-level talks with Saudi officials, part of ongoing efforts to broker peace in Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict. Burhan met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss the situation in Sudan, its regional implications, and initiatives to restore security and stability. The discussions, described by Sudanese officials as “successful and friendly,” also focused on strengthening bilateral relations through the recently established Saudi–Sudanese Coordination Council, formed in October 2025.

Saudi Arabia is part of the “Quad,” along with the United States, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, which have been actively mediating between Sudan’s rival forces: the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions. The United Nations describes the crisis as the world’s worst humanitarian emergency, with critical shortages of food, water, and medical supplies across Sudan. Burhan’s one-day visit underscores Sudan’s reliance on regional and international diplomacy to seek a ceasefire and a sustainable resolution to the war.
