Sudanese Refugees Begin Return Journey from Egypt as Khartoum Rebuilds

Hundreds of Sudanese nationals gathered at Cairo’s main train station on Monday to begin their journey home to Khartoum, as part of an Egyptian government initiative offering free train travel back to the war-torn country. The move comes after Sudan’s military recently regained control of the capital from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking a significant shift in the ongoing civil war that began in April 2023. The conflict, which has pitted the Sudanese Armed Forces against the RSF, has killed more than 40,000 people and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian and displacement crises. Millions have been forced to flee their homes, with over 1.5 million Sudanese refugees crossing into Egypt alone.

Now, as Khartoum begins the slow process of reconstruction, some displaced families are making the difficult decision to return and rebuild their lives. The Egyptian government’s support for repatriation aims to ease pressure on local services while helping those who feel safe enough to go back. Despite continued instability in parts of the country, the return of civilians signals cautious optimism that Sudan’s capital may be entering a new phase of recovery.
