Togo’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS) have killed several armed militants in a major overnight operation in Kpikankandi, located in the Kpendjal prefecture of the Savanes region, near the country’s northern border with Burkina Faso. The June 8 operation, which aimed to preempt an imminent attack, resulted in the seizure of weapons, motorcycles, and other logistics used by the assailants.
Authorities say the militants were part of a jihadist group that had infiltrated the area, part of a broader pattern of extremist violence spreading southward from the Sahel. The FDS acted on intelligence gathered over recent weeks and coordinated with local surveillance units.
The operation was hailed as a strategic victory in Togo’s ongoing campaign against terrorism, which has increasingly targeted the northern regions since 2021. Military officials credited recent government investment in defense infrastructure, including enhanced mobility, surveillance, and counterinsurgency training, for enabling the swift response.
Togo has intensified security efforts under the “Operation Koundjoare” initiative, launched to defend its northern territories from militant spillover. Despite the success, officials warn of continued threats and stress the need for sustained vigilance and regional cooperation to stem cross-border insurgent activity.
