Benin Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni to Run for President in 2026

Benin’s ruling coalition has officially endorsed Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni as its candidate for the 2026 presidential election, following President Patrice Talon’s decision not to seek a third term. The endorsement, announced jointly by the Republican Bloc and the Progressive Union for Renewal, marks a pivotal moment in Benin’s democratic transition. Both parties praised Wadagni for his leadership in driving economic reforms since 2016, when he was appointed finance minister.

A former Deloitte executive with international experience, Wadagni is credited with strengthening Benin’s fiscal stability, attracting foreign investment, and pushing forward major infrastructure projects under Talon’s administration. His nomination signals continuity with Talon’s pro-business, reform driven development agenda. The decision also sets Benin apart in a region where many leaders have amended constitutions to extend their rule. Unlike counterparts in Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and the Central African Republic, Talon is stepping aside after two five-year terms, a move observers say reinforces Benin’s reputation as a democratic outlier in West Africa.

However, challenges remain. Despite macroeconomic growth, youth unemployment, high living costs, and rural poverty continue to fuel public discontent. Analysts say Wadagni will need to balance investor confidence with inclusive policies that address everyday struggles if he hopes to secure widespread support. With elections still over a year away, Wadagni’s candidacy sets the stage for a closely watched contest that could test both the ruling coalition’s unity and Benin’s standing as one of the region’s more stable democracies.
