DR Congo’s Kasai Ebola Outbreak Slows as Vaccination Efforts Expand

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) say the Ebola outbreak in Kasai Province is beginning to show signs of decline, though risks of further spread remain. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports 64 confirmed and probable cases since the outbreak began, including 42 deaths, a fatality rate of roughly 66 percent. In just the past week, seven new cases and seven deaths were recorded across three health areas. Experts say stronger surveillance, quicker case management, and stricter infection control are helping to reduce transmission. The outbreak is currently limited to six of the 21 health zones in Bulape, though health workers remain at risk. Five have been infected so far, with three losing their lives.

Vaccination drives are underway, with more than 4,100 people immunized and thousands of doses in reserve. Authorities say the rapid rollout of vaccines has been crucial in protecting frontline workers and communities. Despite the progress, officials warn that family based clusters and delays in isolating suspected patients could still trigger new waves of infection. They have urged continued vigilance, stressing that Ebola outbreaks can resurge quickly if precautions are relaxed.
