Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni and Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan held high-level talks at State House in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, focusing on trade, infrastructure, and regional cooperation. The leaders emphasized the long-standing partnership between the two countries, which dates back to their independence from Britain in the 1960s.
President Hassan confirmed that the $5 billion East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project is on schedule, with oil transportation from Uganda through Tanzania’s Tanga port expected to begin in July. The electrically heated pipeline is seen as a symbol of strong bilateral collaboration. Discussions also covered integrating rail networks, developing natural gas and petroleum pipelines, and reducing trade barriers between the two nations.
Museveni’s visit follows his re-election for a seventh term in Uganda, while President Hassan recently secured a second term amid contested elections in Tanzania. This marks the first visit to Tanzania by a foreign leader since Hassan’s re-election in October 2026.
