CEMAC Suspends Activities Amid Financial Crisis in Central Africa

The Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) has announced a suspension of most of its projects and official missions due to a severe financial crisis affecting its operations. CEMAC, which includes Cameroon, Gabon, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and Equatorial Guinea, said the pause will remain in effect until revenue collection from the Community Integration Tax improves. This tax, levied on imports, is the Commission’s main source of funding. Last year, it reportedly collected less than half of the expected amount, as member states retained funds amid a financial downturn.

Commission President Baltazar Engonga emphasized that strategically important activities will continue despite the suspension, while administrative meetings and non-essential missions under the 2026 budget will be halted. Experts warn the suspension could delay regional infrastructure projects, impede free movement of people, and slow the pace of economic integration across Central Africa.
