Ghana Seeks Extradition of Russian Blogger Over Alleged Secret Filming and Online Abuse

Ghana says it will seek the extradition of a Russian national accused of secretly recording intimate encounters with women and sharing the footage online without consent. The suspect, described in African and Russian media as a self-styled “pick-up artist” and blogger in his 30s, is alleged to have travelled to Ghana and used hidden recording devices to film women. Some reports claim camera-fitted sunglasses were used, though Ghanaian authorities say the exact method has not been confirmed.

Ghana’s Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, said he had summoned Russia’s ambassador in Accra to discuss the case, stressing that the alleged acts violate Ghana’s cybercrime laws. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection earlier said preliminary checks indicate the suspect has already left the country, but emphasized that this does not diminish the seriousness of the case or the government’s resolve to pursue justice.

George said Ghana would formally request cooperation from Moscow and work with Interpol to locate the suspect. He added that Ghanaian law allows proceedings to continue even if the accused does not return voluntarily. Russia rarely extradites its citizens, but Ghanaian officials say a formal request will still be made. Local media reports also suggest the same individual may have faced similar allegations in Kenya.

Under Ghana’s Cybersecurity Act, the non-consensual publication of intimate images carries heavy penalties, including long prison sentences. Authorities say enforcement has intensified in recent years as part of broader efforts to curb online abuse, sexual extortion and digital exploitation, particularly against women and children.
