Aboubacar Diakité, known as Toumba, a former presidential guard convicted for crimes against humanity, died early Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at the military hospital of Samory Touré camp in Conakry. He passed away at 4:35 a.m., two days after being transferred from prison due to a medical emergency. According to the National Directorate of Penitentiary Administration and Reintegration (DNAPR), his death was caused by acute generalized peritonitis resulting from a strangulated linea alba hernia, despite intensive medical intervention. Reports indicate that his health had deteriorated over several weeks, with prior examinations revealing severe abdominal complications.
Toumba had been serving a 10-year sentence for his role in the September 28, 2009 Conakry stadium massacre. His detention had been turbulent, including a February 2026 prison search that uncovered prohibited items, prompting his transfer to Coyah prison. Authorities said a detailed report on his death will be submitted to judicial bodies. As a central figure in Guinea’s recent history, Toumba’s passing is expected to reignite discussions on accountability, justice, and the legacy of the 2009 massacre.
