Nigeria Places 14 States on Flood Alert as Rainy Season Intensifies

Nigeria’s Hydrological Services Agency has placed 14 states on flood alert, warning residents and authorities to prepare for possible moderate flooding as heavy rains continue across the country. The agency advised people living in high-risk areas, particularly communities along major river channels, to relocate to safer locations, clear blocked drainage systems and avoid walking or driving through flooded roads. State governments have also been urged to strengthen early warning systems, activate emergency response and evacuation plans, and increase public awareness campaigns to reduce the impact of potential floods.

The affected states include Borno, Edo, Niger, Lagos and Plateau, among others. Nigeria’s rainy season typically runs for about six months, beginning in March and becoming more intense from mid-May, especially in northern parts of the country. Annual flooding remains a recurring challenge, affecting homes, infrastructure, agriculture and livelihoods. Climate experts have warned that changing weather patterns linked to climate change are contributing to heavier and less predictable rainfall, placing additional pressure on drainage networks and increasing the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities. Authorities are urging residents to remain alert and follow official safety instructions as the rainy season progresses.
