President Patrice Talon marked Benin’s 65th Independence Day with a powerful and emotional address, confirming it would be his final celebration in office. Speaking to a crowd of jubilant citizens in Cotonou, Talon reflected on his nearly decade-long tenure, highlighting progress made and the challenges that lie ahead. “This is my last Independence Day as your President,” Talon said, pausing amid applause. “But my belief in the potential of Benin remains stronger than ever. We are capable of overcoming underdevelopment if we embrace collective responsibility and unity.”
He cited key achievements of his administration, including infrastructure development, economic reforms, and efforts to modernize national institutions. One of his proudest goals, he noted, was to make Beninese citizens proud of their identity — a promise he believes is being fulfilled. Talon also paid tribute to the armed forces, who were prominently featured in this year’s parade. Colonel James Johnson, spokesperson for the military, emphasized increased defense funding and the construction of a new “defence and security city” as signs of Benin’s commitment to national security. He said these efforts were vital in the face of growing instability in the region.

This year’s parade was held under the theme, “Defence and security forces at the forefront of citizen enthusiasm for a safe and prosperous Benin,” highlighting the critical role of the military in national development. Notably absent from the event were official delegations from neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger—two members of the breakaway Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—despite formal invitations. Their absence underscores the growing diplomatic rift between Benin and the AES bloc, which has rejected ECOWAS authority.
President Talon concluded his speech by thanking the people of Benin for their support and calling on them to stay united as the country prepares for a transition of leadership. “We have shown the world what is possible when a nation believes in itself,” he said. “Let’s continue on this path—together.”
