Burkina Faso Government Urges Armed Groups to End Conflict Amid Allegations of Massacre

The Burkinabe government has issued a strong appeal for armed groups to lay down their weapons and cease hostilities, urging the nation to prioritize development over prolonged conflict. In a televised address on Monday, government spokesperson Gilbert Ouédraogo emphasized the need to shift from violence to rebuilding the country, stressing the importance of national unity and stability for the future of Burkina Faso.

“Enough is enough,” Ouédraogo declared. “It is time for all parties to put down their weapons and focus on peace, development, and the well-being of the people of Burkina Faso.”

The government’s appeal comes amidst rising concerns over a series of violent incidents in the Boucle du Mouhoun region, located in the western part of the country. Reports from early March 2025 had claimed that 305 civilians were killed by the Burkinabe military, sparking outrage both within Burkina Faso and internationally. These allegations have been met with strong denial by the government, which insists that such accusations are false and part of a broader misinformation campaign.

Ouédraogo firmly rejected the massacre claims, calling them “baseless and fabricated” and condemning media outlets that he accused of spreading false narratives. “These are lies that are being spread by certain media outlets with malicious intent,” he said, urging the public to turn to “serious and credible sources” for accurate information. He also warned that efforts to stir public unrest or discredit the government’s security forces would be ineffective.

The controversy surrounding the alleged massacre has raised tensions in Burkina Faso, which has been grappling with insurgent violence since 2015. The country has faced increasing attacks from various armed groups, including Islamic extremists, leading to widespread displacement and a humanitarian crisis. Despite these challenges, Ouédraogo emphasized that the Burkinabe government remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining security and fighting insurgency.

While the government continues to advocate for peace, Ouédraogo made it clear that the state’s response to insurgents would remain firm. “We will not tolerate any threat to the safety and sovereignty of Burkina Faso,” he stated. “The military will continue to act decisively to protect our citizens and restore peace.”

The situation in Burkina Faso remains volatile, with ongoing clashes between the military and armed groups in several regions. Despite international calls for peace and dialogue, the conflict persists, fueled by a combination of extremist ideology, local grievances, and political instability.

As the government continues its call for national reconciliation, the international community remains watchful, concerned about the growing humanitarian crisis and the potential for further violence. Ouédraogo’s appeal for an end to hostilities is seen as a critical moment for Burkina Faso, where many hope that diplomacy and development can pave the way for a peaceful future.
