Burkina Faso Urges Reform of OACPS to Tackle Security and Global Challenges

Burkina Faso has called for sweeping reforms of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) to strengthen its relevance in addressing global crises, during the bloc’s 11th summit in Malabo. Speaking on behalf of President Ibrahim Traoré, Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré urged member states to move beyond declarations and implement concrete, measurable actions to confront pressing challenges such as terrorism, climate change, and economic instability.

The summit, which brings together 79 member countries across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, focused on enhancing cooperation under shifting global dynamics. Burkina Faso warned that the bloc’s future relevance depends on its ability to adapt to increasing unilateralism, geopolitical tensions, and economic uncertainty. Ouagadougou also highlighted the worsening security crisis in the Sahel region, where armed groups linked to extremist networks continue to carry out attacks, displace communities, and strain state resources. The country reaffirmed its commitment to defending national sovereignty while supporting multilateral efforts to restore stability.

In addition, Burkina Faso called on member states to better utilize frameworks such as the Samoa Agreement, which governs cooperation between OACPS countries and the European Union, to drive inclusive growth, climate resilience, and sustainable development. The appeal underscores growing pressure within the bloc to evolve into a more action-oriented organization capable of delivering tangible results for its member states.
