Ghanaian Footballer Dominic Frimpong Killed in Armed Attack on Team Bus

Ghanaian football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old winger for Berekum Chelsea, who was killed after the team’s bus came under attack by suspected armed robbers. The incident occurred on Sunday as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match against Samartex in Samreboi, in the Western Region of Ghana. According to a club statement, heavily armed, masked men ambushed the bus and opened fire as the driver attempted to escape. Players and officials were forced to flee into nearby bushes to take cover. One other player was seriously injured and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed Frimpong’s death, describing it as a devastating loss to both his club and the national football community. “Dominic was a promising young talent whose passion and commitment reflected the spirit of Ghana football,” the association said. The GFA also announced plans to review and strengthen security measures for teams traveling for domestic competitions, particularly in areas where road travel poses safety risks.

This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about highway security in parts of the country. In 2023, another top-flight side, Legon Cities, experienced a similar armed robbery attack on their team bus, though no casualties were reported at the time. Authorities are yet to provide further details on the attackers or confirm any arrests, as investigations continue into the fatal ambush.
