George Weah Urges UN Oversight Amid Reports of Voter Intimidation in Liberia’s Nimba County

Former Liberian President George Weah has expressed deep concern over allegations of voter intimidation and political interference in Nimba County ahead of the upcoming senatorial by-election. Weah has called on the United Nations (UN) to closely monitor the situation to ensure a free, fair, and transparent electoral process. Weah, who served as Liberia’s 24th president from 2018 to 2024, warned that any threats to democracy and the rule of law could destabilize the country, particularly in a region historically known for political tensions.

Speaking to journalists, Weah underscored the importance of maintaining a peaceful election atmosphere, free from intimidation by security forces or political actors. Reports have surfaced alleging that local officials and security personnel may be influencing voters, raising fears among opposition parties and civil society groups.

In response to Weah’s concerns, UN Resident Coordinator Christine N. Umutoni reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s democratic process. The UN, along with regional organizations such as ECOWAS and the African Union (AU), has been closely monitoring Liberia’s political landscape since its transition to democracy in 2005, following years of civil conflict. Umutoni assured that the UN will work with Liberia’s electoral commission and security agencies to promote a credible election process, in line with international democratic standards.

Nimba County, Liberia’s second most populous region, has often been a key battleground in national politics. The upcoming senatorial by-election, triggered by a vacancy in the county’s Senate seat, has drawn significant attention due to its potential impact on the country’s political balance. Opposition parties and election watchdogs have urged the National Elections Commission (NEC) to ensure transparency in voter registration, polling station security, and result tabulation. As Liberia moves toward the by-election, all eyes will be on Nimba County, with local and international observers closely monitoring the situation to uphold democratic integrity.
