Ghana and Colombia have signed a landmark agreement establishing direct maritime connectivity between the Port of Tema in Ghana and the Port of Cartagena in Colombia. The deal, finalized in BogotĂ¡, aims to strengthen trade links between Africa and Latin America and create new economic opportunities. Ghanaian officials praised the leadership of Colombia’s first Afro-Colombian Vice President, Francia Elena MĂ¡rquez Mina, and Colombian Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio for championing the initiative.

The agreement is symbolic as well as practical: it transforms the historic Atlantic Ocean corridor which once bore the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade into a route promoting job creation, economic empowerment, and sustainable trade. Officials say the new maritime route is expected to facilitate faster cargo movement, reduce shipping costs, and expand exports of goods such as agricultural products, minerals, and manufactured items between the two regions. The deal marks a milestone in Ghana-Colombia relations and highlights a growing focus on South–South trade partnerships.
