Ghana to Receive 40 More Deportees from US Under Existing Agreement

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that the country will soon welcome 40 additional deportees from the United States, following the earlier return of 14 Ghanaians this month. The announcement comes amid sharp criticism from the parliamentary Minority, which argued that government had bypassed parliamentary approval in accepting the deportees. Officials, however, insist the transfers are carried out under a longstanding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Accra and Washington that does not require ratification by Parliament.

Minister Ablakwa stressed that Ghana’s decision is guided by humanitarian principles, noting concerns about the treatment of deportees abroad. He added that government agencies are coordinating with social services to help the returnees reintegrate into society. The 40 individuals are expected to arrive in Accra in the coming days, bringing renewed attention to Ghana’s migration management policies and its cooperation with the United States on deportation cases.
