Hisi Studio: Redefining Fashion for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Kenya

In Nairobi, Hisi Studio is breaking new ground in the fashion industry by designing clothing specifically for the blind and visually impaired, a group often neglected by mainstream fashion brands. Founded by Angela Wanjiku, the studio creates innovative apparel featuring braille prints and tactile designs, aiming to make fashion more inclusive and accessible.

“We create clothing that meets the needs of visually impaired people by incorporating braille prints on all our pieces,” explains Wanjiku. “Some of the phrases include, ‘The less we see with our eyes, the more we see with our hearts,’ promoting a message of inclusion.”

According to the World Health Organization, there are 39 million people who are blind and an additional 500 million people living with visual impairments globally. In Kenya alone, 224,000 individuals are blind, while 750,000 live with visual impairments. Despite these staggering statistics, the fashion industry in Kenya has largely overlooked this demographic—until now.

Julius Mbura, a visually impaired lawyer and customer of Hisi Studio, shares his personal experience with the brand: “The t-shirt I’m wearing allows me to appreciate fashion in a way I never could before. I can read the messages myself, thanks to the tactile and braille designs, without needing anyone else’s help.”

One of Mbura’s t-shirts carries the empowering message, “Wade in the water, contend for your future,” accompanied by artwork depicting the contours of Mount Kenya. This design highlights Hisi Studio’s focus on creating pieces that are not only accessible but also meaningful.

All of Hisi Studio’s materials are locally sourced, contributing to the Kenyan economy. The company has found a unique market through social media and e-commerce platforms, where its products are sold directly to customers. In addition to this, Hisi Studio has plans to expand its reach by partnering with retail shops across Kenya, making their inclusive designs available to an even wider audience.

Wanjiku’s commitment to inclusivity through fashion is setting a new precedent, proving that style and accessibility can go hand in hand. Hisi Studio is making significant strides in championing accessibility for people with visual impairments, showing that fashion can be both beautiful and inclusive.
