Kenya and the Dominican Republic signed an agreement on Monday to enhance emergency support for Kenyan police deployed in Haiti as part of a UN-backed multinational security mission. The pact, signed by Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez and Kenyan Foreign Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, ensures medical and repatriation assistance for Kenyan officers wounded or killed during operations.
The mission, led by Kenyan forces, is aimed at helping Haiti’s overwhelmed police combat rampant gang violence. With only 1,000 of the planned 2,500 personnel deployed so far, the mission remains under-resourced. Kenyan officers have faced multiple attacks amid escalating unrest.
Gangs now control 85% of Port-au-Prince, with violence surging into previously safe zones. In 2023 alone, over 5,600 people were killed, and more than one million displaced. The UN reported 1,086 deaths and 383 injuries in February and March 2024 alone.
