In a sweeping political overhaul, Mali’s transitional authorities on May 13, 2025, dissolved all political parties and politically affiliated organizations. The move, enacted by presidential decree 2025-0339 PTRM, was announced on national television by Minister Mamani Nassiré and follows an extraordinary Council of Ministers meeting.
The decree bans all political activities and meetings, warning of sanctions for violations. However, individuals in office may continue their roles if they no longer represent dissolved parties.
The decision follows a May 12 vote by the National Transitional Council, which repealed Mali’s 2005 political party charter and 2015 opposition law by a vote of 130–2. Authorities say the move reflects public feedback from recent national consultations, but critics accuse the junta of eroding democracy. Protests on May 3 signaled growing opposition to the centralization of power.
