Arab League Selects Nabil Fahmy as Next Secretary-General

Arab foreign ministers have unanimously nominated former Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmy as the next Secretary-General of the Arab League, reinforcing Egypt’s long-standing leadership of the regional body. Fahmy, 75, is expected to be formally endorsed by Arab heads of state at the upcoming summit in Saudi Arabia before assuming office in July for a five-year term. He will succeed incumbent Ahmed Aboul Gheit, continuing a trend in which Egypt has dominated the position since the League’s founding in 1945.

A seasoned diplomat, Fahmy served as Egypt’s foreign minister from June 2013 to July 2014 and previously held key roles including ambassador to the United States. His appointment will make him the eighth Egyptian to lead the 22-member Cairo-based organization. The only exception remains Tunisian diplomat Chedli Klibi, who held the role in the 1980s when Egypt was suspended following its peace agreement with Israel.

In his first remarks after the nomination, Fahmy described the role as a “great responsibility,” pointing to ongoing regional instability, violations of international law, and prolonged conflicts affecting Arab nations. While he did not directly name specific countries, his comments align with longstanding Arab League positions on issues such as foreign intervention and territorial disputes. The Arab League serves as a political platform for member states to coordinate policies, address regional challenges, and promote collective Arab interests.
