Ghana Sacks National Team Coach Otto Addo Weeks Before World Cup Opener

The Ghana Football Association has dismissed Black Stars head coach Otto Addo just over two months before Ghana’s opening match at the upcoming FIFA World Cup. In a brief statement released Monday, the GFA confirmed that it had “parted ways” with Addo with immediate effect but did not provide reasons for the decision or name a successor. The move follows a poor run of form in recent international friendlies, including a 2–1 defeat to Germany national football team in Stuttgart, a heavy 5–1 loss to Austria national football team, and a string of four consecutive defeats that raised concerns about the team’s readiness for the global tournament.

Addo, who was in his second stint as Ghana coach, had only recently taken full charge after being released from his role at Borussia Dortmund in March 2024. He previously led the team on an interim basis during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana secured a win over South Korea but exited at the group stage. A former Ghana international, Addo was born in Hamburg, Germany, and enjoyed a successful club career, including winning the Bundesliga with Dortmund. He also represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup.

Ghana has qualified for the World Cup for the fifth time and faces a challenging group stage, drawn alongside Croatia, England, and Panama. The Black Stars are scheduled to kick off their campaign on June 17 against Panama in Toronto, leaving limited time for the GFA to appoint a new coach and stabilize preparations.
