Spain Seeks Increased Gas Supplies from Algeria Amid Global Energy Uncertainty

Spain is exploring increased natural gas imports from Algeria following high-level talks between Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno and his Algerian counterpart on Thursday. The discussions come as tensions linked to the Iran conflict disrupt global energy markets, tightening supply and driving price volatility. Spain, heavily reliant on imported gas, is looking to reinforce energy security through closer cooperation with Algeria, its top supplier over the past three years.

According to Spanish grid operator Enagás, Algerian gas accounted for more than 29% of Spain’s total imports in the first two months of 2026. The two countries are connected by the Medgaz pipeline, which is currently operating at full capacity, though experts say expansion is possible.

Albares described Algeria as a “stable and reliable” partner, adding that both sides agreed to strengthen their strategic energy partnership. With several countries seeking alternative suppliers amid Middle East disruptions, Algeria is emerging as a key player in Europe’s shifting energy landscape.
