Benin Bigins Solar Project to Power 50,000 Homes

Benin has unveiled a €45 million (29.5 billion CFA francs) solar energy program that will provide electricity to more than 50,000 households, marking a major step in the country’s energy transition. The project, led by Axian Energy in partnership with Sika Capital, will see the construction of four solar power plants in Bohicon, Parakou, Djougou, and Natitingou, with a combined capacity of 50 MWac. It is backed by €35 million in financing from international development partners and strongly supported by the Beninese government.

Authorities say the initiative will help Benin reach its target of sourcing 30% of its energy from renewables by 2030, while also cutting dependence on costly fossil fuel imports. The SBPE (Benin Electric Power Production Company) and SBEE (Benin Electricity Distribution Company) will manage integration into the national grid under the supervision of the Ministries of Energy and Finance. By diversifying energy sources, the government hopes to tackle recurring power shortages that affect homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses across the country. Officials add that the project will strengthen economic growth, modernize public services, and improve investment attractiveness in Benin.

The solar initiative is also expected to create jobs during construction and operation, while giving younger generations access to cleaner, more reliable, and affordable energy. Energy experts note that West Africa has some of the world’s best solar potential, but limited investment has slowed progress. Benin’s new program signals a stronger commitment to accelerating the energy transition, boosting energy security, and contributing to the global fight against climate change.
