South Africa Races Against Time to Host Africa’s First G20 Summit

With just 100 days to go before the world’s most powerful leaders gather in Johannesburg, South Africa is ramping up preparations for the first-ever G20 Leaders’ Summit on African soil. The November summit is being framed as a historic moment, both for South Africa’s global standing and fo r Africa’s role in shaping international policy. Of the 132 scheduled G20 meetings under South Africa’s presidency, 87 have already taken place, spanning both the Sherpa and Finance tracks. The remaining ministerial meetings in September are expected to lay the foundation for the Johannesburg Leaders’ Declaration, centered on the theme: “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”

Key priorities on the agenda include tackling global inequality, restructuring sovereign debt, and boosting inclusive economic growth. To give the initiative weight, President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed a G20 taskforce chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz. The group is tasked with proposing practical solutions to reduce wealth disparities and strengthen financial resilience worldwide.

Diplomatic attention, however, is partly focused on Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump has yet to confirm whether he will attend. His criticisms of South Africa’s land reform policies have created uncertainty, with suggestions that he may send a representative instead. South Africa’s International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola, remained diplomatic: “We will proceed with the G20 Leaders’ Summit with or without President Trump. It’s an unpredictable situation, but our invitation stands.”

For South Africa, hosting the G20 is not only about logistics but also about symbolism showcasing Africa as an active voice in global problem solving. The countdown now begins to a landmark event that could redefine the continent’s place at the international decision-making table.
