The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a US$250,000 (approximately GH¢3 million) humanitarian donation to support victims of the recent floods that devastated several communities across Ghana. The announcement was made by Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had officially received notification of the regional body’s assistance. He assured Ghanaians that the full amount would be transferred to the appropriate government agencies once the funds are received. Mr. Ablakwa expressed appreciation to ECOWAS on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, describing the financial support as a strong demonstration of regional solidarity and the spirit of African unity during times of crisis.
The donation comes in the wake of widespread flooding that affected parts of the country, forcing many residents from their homes, damaging public infrastructure, destroying property and livelihoods, and leaving hundreds of families in need of emergency assistance. Government agencies, emergency responders, and humanitarian organizations have been providing relief items, temporary shelter, and other essential services to affected communities, while recovery efforts continue in flood-hit areas. The ECOWAS financial support is expected to complement ongoing relief operations by helping provide food, shelter, medical assistance, and other humanitarian needs for displaced families, while contributing to the rehabilitation of affected communities. The gesture underscores ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting member states during humanitarian emergencies and strengthening regional cooperation in disaster response and resilience.
