Nigeria has formally submitted bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a historic centenary edition of the multi-sport event. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed the submissions after Canada, which hosted the inaugural Games in Hamilton in 1930, declined to enter the race.
If successful, Nigeria would make history as the first African nation to host the Games, a move seen as a major boost for African sport and infrastructure development. India, which previously hosted in 2010, is using its bid to reinforce its status as a global sporting hub while also eyeing a larger prize—the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad.

The bid arrive at a turbulent time for the Games co-current with India’s submission. In recent years, financial pressures have forced host withdrawals, including South Africa’s cancellation of its 2022 plans and Victoria, Australia’s withdrawal from 2026. As a result, Glasgow, Scotland, will stage a slimmed-down version of the Games in 2026 to keep the tradition alive.
Sports analysts say Nigeria and India’s interest reflects the enduring appeal of the Games as a platform for national pride, economic investment, and international visibility. Organizers argue that hosting could leave lasting legacies for communities through jobs, infrastructure, and grassroots sports development.
