Senegal’s President Faye Calls for Stronger Global Action on Gender Equality at UN

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has called on world leaders to intensify the fight against discrimination and violence, stressing that true progress is impossible without advancing gender equality. Speaking in New York at the 80th United Nations General Assembly, during a special session marking 30 years since the landmark Beijing World Conference on Women (Beijing+30), President Faye reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to empowering women and girls. He described equality not only as a universal right but also as a cornerstone of peace, stability, and sustainable development.

The Senegalese leader tied his message to his country’s long-term Vision 2050 plan, which places women and youth at the center of national growth strategies. “Our future depends on their leadership and inclusion,” Faye said, highlighting how education, entrepreneurship, and political participation for women are crucial to building resilience in Africa and beyond. Faye urged a coordinated global response to dismantle systemic inequalities, arguing that the international community has a responsibility to ensure future generations inherit a fairer and more harmonious world. His remarks come amid growing calls for renewed commitments to the Beijing Declaration, as progress on gender equality remains uneven across many regions.
