Hundreds of Egyptian Muslims gathered in Cairo on Tuesday for public processions and religious chants marking the Mawlid al-Nabi, the annual commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad. The gathering took place around Cairo’s historic Al-Azhar district, a major center of Islamic learning and religious life. Participants carried banners, recited praises and joined processions through the streets as part of the traditional celebrations. For many members of Egypt’s Sufi communities, the occasion is an opportunity to strengthen their faith and reflect on the life and teachings of the Prophet.
Sufi leader Saber Abd El Raouf said the commemoration was less about celebrating the Prophet himself than renewing believers’ spiritual connection to him. Participants also joined a procession from the Sidi Saleh Al-Jaafari Mosque toward the Al-Hussein shrine, reciting religious praises and prayers along the route. Mawlid is observed in many Muslim-majority countries, although the way it is marked varies widely. Supporters view the occasion as an important expression of devotion and religious heritage, while some Muslim scholars and communities do not observe it, arguing that the celebration was not part of early Islamic practice.
In Egypt, however, Mawlid has a long cultural and religious tradition. Celebrations commonly include religious gatherings, processions, recitations, lectures and charitable activities. The event once again brought together worshippers in one of Cairo’s most historic religious districts, highlighting the continuing importance of religious traditions in Egypt’s public and cultural life.
