Uganda has dropped investigations into former Parliament Speaker Anita Among, months after security agencies searched her properties and seized luxury vehicles during a probe into alleged corruption and illicit wealth. The decision was announced by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, who said President Yoweri Museveni had ordered Among’s release from house arrest and decided that she would not be prosecuted. Among was placed under restrictions at her Kampala residence following investigations that began in May. Security agencies searched several properties linked to her, including residences in Kampala and Bukedea, as well as her parliamentary office. A Rolls-Royce Cullinan reportedly valued at about 3.4 billion Ugandan shillings was among the vehicles seized during the investigations.
Kainerugaba said Museveni had decided to forgive Among, adding that she had “made mistakes” but would not face prosecution. Following the announcement, security personnel were reported to have withdrawn from her residences. The development came as Uganda’s anti-corruption authorities sought to distance themselves from claims that they were directly prosecuting the former Speaker. A spokesperson said the agency had never publicly stated that it was investigating Among. Among became Speaker in March 2022 and was regarded as a prominent figure within Museveni’s ruling establishment. She has faced corruption allegations for years and was sanctioned by both the United States and United Kingdom over allegations of corruption. She stepped down from the race to retain the speakership in May amid mounting political pressure. The decision to end the case has generated renewed debate over accountability and the treatment of politically influential figures in Uganda, particularly because the investigation had involved multiple security agencies and allegations of financial wrongdoing.
