Ghana Recalls High Commissioner to Nigeria Over Primary Election Allegations

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, following allegations of misconduct linked to internal party primaries. In a statement issued over the weekend, the Presidency said the decision followed claims of vote buying and incitement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East constituency, where Baba Jamal was a candidate.

President Mahama directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to implement the recall, noting that although similar accusations were made against other aspirants, Baba Jamal was the only contender holding an official state position at the time. This, the statement said, raised concerns about adherence to standards required of public office holders. The President acknowledged that the NDC has launched its own internal probe but stressed that the recall was taken independently to safeguard public service integrity and avoid any perceived breach of the Government Code of Conduct. The directive takes immediate effect, with the Foreign Affairs Ministry tasked with completing the necessary diplomatic procedures. The statement was signed by Presidential Spokesperson and Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
