Guinea-Bissau Opposition Leader Summoned by Military Court Over Coup Allegations

Guinea-Bissau’s main opposition figure, Domingos Simões Pereira, has been ordered to appear before a military court over alleged links to multiple coup attempts, according to judicial and military sources. Pereira, leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which led the country to independence in 1974, was detained during the November military takeover that removed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló shortly after presidential elections. He was released last month but remains under house arrest in connection with separate financial crime investigations.

Military authorities now suspect him of involvement in at least two alleged coup plots, reportedly in late 2023 and October 2025. Pereira has not publicly responded to the latest accusations. Guinea-Bissau has experienced repeated political upheaval since independence, with five coups, persistent poverty, corruption, and drug trafficking contributing to long-term instability.
