Ghana Protests to UN After Attack on Its Peacekeepers in Lebanon

The government of Ghana has formally lodged a protest with the United Nations following a missile attack that injured two Ghanaian soldiers serving with the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. In a statement issued on March 7, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the protest was submitted to UN Secretary-General António Guterres after the attack on Ghanaian troops deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on March 6. The incident left two soldiers seriously injured.

Ghana has called for a full, immediate, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack on the peacekeepers. The government said those responsible must be identified and held accountable, describing the incident as a grave violation of international law and an affront to the protections granted to UN peacekeeping personnel. Accra also urged the United Nations to take urgent measures to guarantee the safety of Ghanaian troops and other peacekeepers operating in the conflict-affected region.

The government expressed solidarity with the injured soldiers and their families, pledging that no effort would be spared in pursuing justice and ensuring enhanced protection for Ghana’s peacekeeping personnel. Ghana reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to international peacekeeping operations, stressing that safeguarding the lives of UN personnel remains essential to global peace and security efforts.
