Ghana Urges Commonwealth to Condemn Attack on Its UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon

Ghana has called on the Commonwealth of Nations to strongly condemn a missile strike that injured four Ghanaian peacekeepers serving in southern Lebanon. Speaking at a Commonwealth meeting in London on Sunday, Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described the attack as a violation of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He urged member states to demand a full investigation and accountability for those responsible. The Ghanaian troops were deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) when their base was struck on Friday shortly before 18:00 local time. Videos shared on social media showed significant damage to facilities housing the Ghanaian battalion, with fires burning inside the compound.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, three of the injured soldiers suffered minor wounds, while a fourth who was critically injured has undergone surgery and is responding to treatment. All four are now reported to be in stable condition. The attack comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Israel has been conducting strikes against positions linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon after the Iran-backed group launched rockets and drones toward the Israeli city of Haifa. Hezbollah said the attacks were retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Ghana has formally protested the incident to António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. Guterres has stated that those responsible for the attack on UN peacekeepers must be held accountable. Ghana is one of the longest-serving troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions and has deployed thousands of personnel to UN operations over the decades, including its current contingent serving with UNIFIL in Lebanon.
