Former Scottish Teacher Found Guilty of Sexual Abuse in South Africa

An 86-year-old former teacher, Iain Wares, has been found guilty by a court in Cape Town of indecently assaulting a former pupil in the 1980s. Wares, who previously taught at Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College during the 1960s and 1970s, has faced allegations from dozens of former students over historical sexual abuse. The conviction in South Africa stems from an incident in 1988, when Wares was teaching at a state school in Cape Town. The victim, identified as Stephen (name changed for legal reasons), said he felt relieved after a decades-long wait for justice. However, he noted that many other alleged victims are still seeking accountability.

Wares has also been the subject of extradition proceedings after a South African high court ruled he could be sent to Scotland to face further charges. The process has been delayed as authorities continue to pursue additional allegations linked to his time teaching in the UK. The case highlights ongoing efforts to prosecute historical abuse cases across multiple jurisdictions, with legal proceedings continuing in both South Africa and Scotland.
