Lincoln University for Cancels g President Mahama’s Honorary Degree

Ghana’s embassy in the United States has expressed disappointment over Lincoln University’s last minute decision to cancel plans to award an honorary doctorate to former President John Dramani Mahama. In a statement, the embassy said it was “surprised and disappointed” by the reversal, which came just hours before the scheduled ceremony on March 26, while Mahama was already in the United States.

Reports indicate the decision followed objections from a section of the university community over Mahama’s perceived stance on Ghana’s proposed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill. Ghanaian officials said the matter had not been raised during prior engagements, noting that preparations, including final logistical reviews had been completed days before the visit. The embassy emphasized that the invitation had been accepted in good faith and highlighted Lincoln University’s historic ties with Ghana, including its connection to Kwame Nkrumah, an alumnus of the institution.

While acknowledging the university’s right to respond to internal concerns, the embassy argued that the controversy relates to an ongoing legislative process in Ghana rather than the position of any single individual. It also defended Mahama’s record, describing his leadership as grounded in democratic principles and open dialogue on sensitive issues. The embassy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong relations and expressed hope that the long-standing partnership between Ghana and Lincoln University would help resolve the situation.
