At least eight people were killed and five others injured after a gunman opened fire on a busy street in southern Egypt on Monday, according to the country’s Interior Ministry. The shooting occurred in the province of Assiut, triggering a major security response near Assiut University Hospital, where ambulances and police vehicles were seen gathering shortly after the attack. Video footage published by Cairo24.com captured the chaotic aftermath as emergency personnel rushed victims to hospital. Authorities said security forces pursued the attacker following the shooting and later killed him during an exchange of gunfire.

While investigators are still working to establish a clear motive, the Interior Ministry revealed that the suspect had a history of psychological illness and had previously received treatment at a psychiatric hospital in Cairo. The identities of the victims have not yet been officially released, and officials say investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
