AU Commission Chair Visits Mali to Strengthen Ties Amid Ongoing Political Transition

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has arrived in Bamako for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening relations between the African Union and Mali, despite the country’s continued suspension from participating in the continental body’s activities. The visit comes as the African Union seeks to deepen dialogue with Mali’s transitional authorities following the country’s suspension in June 2021 after the military takeover. During his visit, Youssouf is scheduled to meet Mali’s Transitional President, Assimi Goïta, after holding talks with Foreign Affairs Minister Abdoulaye Diop.

The mission follows recommendations by the African Union Peace and Security Council calling for intensified engagement with Mali to support a return to constitutional governance while reaffirming respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Council has also urged increased support for Mali’s security sector as it continues to confront armed extremist groups. Although Mali remains suspended from AU decision-making bodies, the continental organization has maintained diplomatic engagement through its Liaison Office for Mali and the Sahel and continued consultations with the transitional government.

The discussions are expected to focus on Mali’s ongoing political transition under its revised Transition Charter, which allows General Goïta to remain head of state until conditions are deemed suitable for peaceful, democratic elections. The African Union said the visit provides an opportunity for both sides to review existing cooperation, reaffirm mutual commitments and map out the next phase of relations between Bamako and the continental organization.
