The Senegalese Football Federation has dismissed national team head coach Pape Thiaw following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the decision was taken “in the best interests of Senegalese football.” Thiaw’s departure was announced overnight from Sunday to Monday, bringing an end to his tenure after less than two years in charge of the Teranga Lions. Senegal reached the Round of 32 after a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq, but their World Cup campaign ended with a 3-2 defeat to Belgium in a closely contested knockout match.
Appointed in December 2024, Thiaw guided Senegal through a period of high expectations following the country’s recent success on the African football stage. However, his tenure was also marked by controversy during the previous Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), when Senegal lost its title after players briefly left the pitch following his instructions during a disputed incident. The federation did not immediately announce a replacement or provide further details on the decision, but said it was made with the future of Senegalese football in mind. Attention is now expected to turn to the appointment of a new coach as Senegal begins preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
