Leaders of the African Union have adopted a landmark resolution describing slavery, deportation, colonialism and apartheid as acts of genocide and crimes against the people of Africa. The decision was taken during a two-day AU summit held in Addis Ababa, where member states agreed to intensify efforts to secure international recognition of the resolution.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the declaration represents a major step in confronting historical injustices and their lasting impact on Africa and its diaspora. He also used the forum to call for an end to what he described as the extermination of the Palestinian people, reaffirming the bloc’s solidarity with Palestine.

As part of the resolution, AU members designated November 30 as the African Day of Tribute to African Martyrs and Victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Colonization, and Apartheid. The day will be observed annually to honor victims and promote historical justice. Leaders agreed to keep the matter under review and to coordinate diplomatic efforts to push for broader global acknowledgment of the resolution.
