Nigerian Designer Alphadi Showcases African Cotton in Rome to Mark World Cotton Day

Celebrated Nigerian fashion designer Alphadi, widely known as “the Magician of the Desert,” led a creative masterclass at Rome’s Academy of Fashion to promote African cotton and cross-cultural design ahead of World Cotton Day, observed on 7 October. The two-day session, organized in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, brought together 14 fashion students who learned to merge African craftsmanship with Italian tailoring. The project celebrated cotton’s journey “from field to fashion” and its vital role in sustainable global development.

Working closely with the students, Alphadi guided them in producing seven original cotton-based designs, blending Sahel-inspired textures and motifs with European couture techniques. “For me, this is a way to highlight Africa’s creativity and capability,” Alphadi said. “African cotton is of exceptional quality — it’s a fabric for the world, not just the continent.” Student Cecilia Marchesini described the experience as transformative. “It’s the first time we’ve collaborated with a designer whose cultural roots are so different from ours. We discovered that African and Italian fashion share a surprising harmony,” she said.

FAO officials noted that the collaboration underscores how fashion can promote sustainable value chains and empower cotton producers globally. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2021, World Cotton Day celebrates the economic and cultural importance of cotton, a crop that supports millions of farmers across more than 80 countries, particularly in Africa and Asia. According to El Mamoun Amrouk, Senior Economist at FAO, the initiative was first proposed by African cotton producing nations as a way to “raise visibility for cotton and recognize its vital role in trade, livelihoods, and poverty reduction.”

Cotton remains one of the world’s most traded agricultural commodities, sustaining economies, creating jobs, and linking rural producers to global fashion markets. Through efforts like Alphadi’s masterclass, FAO hopes to inspire a new generation of designers to value cotton as both a creative and developmental resource.
