At least two people have died and several others were injured after a residential building collapsed early Wednesday morning in the Old Medina district of Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, authorities confirmed. The collapse occurred in the densely populated heart of the city, where many aging structures remain vulnerable to decay and overcrowding. According to local reports, the victims an elderly couple living on the top floor were unable to escape before the building gave way.

Emergency crews from the Civil Protection Service rushed to the scene and have been working around the clock to locate survivors. As of Wednesday afternoon, rescuers were still attempting to reach a 26-year-old man believed to be trapped under the rubble. Residents nearby described hearing a loud crash followed by screams as the structure came down. Authorities have cordoned off the area, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse, which initial reports suggest may be linked to structural weakness and poor maintenance. Local officials have warned that several old buildings in the historic Old Medina remain at risk and urged occupants to report any visible signs of structural instability.
