Chad Names New National Stadium After Late President Idriss Déby

Chad has announced that its new 30,000-seat stadium in N’Djamena will be named after the late President Idriss Déby Itno, honoring his role in initiating the project.

The decision, made official by a government decree on May 13, marks the second major facility to bear Déby’s name, alongside the Idriss Mahamat Ouya Stadium. Located in the Mandjaffa district, the stadium is Chad’s largest and is set to open in the coming months.

Funded by China, the stadium’s construction began in 2019 when Déby laid the foundation stone. He died in April 2021 during a military operation against rebels in northern Chad. His son, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, assumed power after his death and was later elected president under the Fifth Republic. A special committee has been formed to oversee the stadium’s inauguration.
