Construction crews in Dakar are working around the clock as Senegal prepares to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, marking the first time an Olympic event will be held on African soil. The Games are scheduled to run from October 31 to November 13, bringing together approximately 2,700 athletes aged 15 to 18 to compete in 35 sports across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. The event is expected to put Senegal in the international sporting spotlight while creating opportunities to promote youth participation, tourism and the development of less-established sports.

Among the sports drawing attention is skateboarding, which will feature at the Dakar Youth Olympics. Although the sport remains relatively small in Senegal, local enthusiasts hope the Games will attract new participants, investment and greater recognition. Student Thomas Dieme described the event as a historic opportunity for Senegal and the wider continent to experience a major international sporting competition. Local skateboarder Sete Awad also expressed hope that the Games would help the sport grow and create more opportunities for aspiring athletes. For residents, the event carries personal significance. Dakar resident Rose Faye said she was excited that the Games would take place in her home country after she missed opportunities to attend Olympic events while living in France.

The Youth Olympic Games, first held in Singapore in 2010, are designed to bring together young athletes from around the world while promoting education, cultural exchange and Olympic values. The opening ceremony is scheduled for October 31 in Diamniadio, about 40 kilometers from central Dakar. The event’s mascot, Ayo, a young lion, reflects Senegal’s national identity as the country prepares to welcome athletes, officials and visitors from across the globe. Beyond the competition, the Games represent a major milestone for African sport and an opportunity for Senegal to showcase its infrastructure, culture and hospitality to an international audience.
