“Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman’s Gift of the Givers Stands Firm on Humanitarian Mission Amid Gaza Crisis”

Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman, the founder of South Africa’s prominent humanitarian organization Gift of the Givers, took the stage at a rally in Cape Town’s Sea Point promenade in October, where a large crowd cheered for his powerful message of solidarity with Palestine. Dressed in his trademark dark green T-shirt adorned with the South African flag and his organization’s name, Sooliman passionately shared an update on his team’s efforts to provide aid in Gaza amidst the ongoing Israeli assault.

The rally, held in support of Palestine, offered an opportunity for Sooliman to express his frustration with the situation. He spoke movingly about the personal toll the war had taken on his team in Gaza, some of whom had lost family members during the brutal attack. He also underscored the 75-year-long struggle for justice for Palestinians, calling out those who defend Israel’s actions by labeling any criticism as anti-Semitic.

“Every time we protested, the Zionists were too clever; they were arrogant, acted with impunity,” Sooliman remarked. “They put fear in corporations, universities, and governments. And now, I have a new message for them: find a new narrative. That is dull, boring and stupid.”

His speech was met with resounding applause from the crowd, showing the level of support for his words and actions.

Sooliman, a trained medical doctor who has since dedicated his life to humanitarian work, founded Gift of the Givers over 30 years ago after a life-changing spiritual trip to Turkey. The organization has since grown to become one of the most prominent aid agencies in South Africa, responding to crises both locally and globally.

Despite the organization’s extensive network and success in delivering aid, Sooliman has recently come under fire from pro-Israel groups for his outspoken criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza. His comments have made him a target, but Sooliman remains resolute in his commitment to humanitarian principles.

“I don’t mince my words,” Sooliman said in an interview from his home in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. “I don’t look at conflicts from a political point of view. I look at it from a humanitarian point of view.”

Sooliman’s unwavering focus on human needs over political affiliations has earned him respect and admiration, even as he continues to speak out against the injustice he perceives in the ongoing Gaza conflict.
