ECOWAS Presents Report on Strategies to Combat Terrorism in West Africa

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has outlined its strategic approach to bolster international support for African efforts in the fight against terrorism. The comprehensive report, presented by ECOWAS Permanent Observer to the United Nations, Jawara-Njai, highlights various initiatives the regional organization has implemented to address terrorism in West Africa.

The report outlines key components of the ECOWAS Action Plan for the Eradication of Terrorism, emphasizing the activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force and the incorporation of kinetic measures as part of intervention strategies. These actions are designed to enhance the regional body’s capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to terrorist threats.

The key objective of the session, held by the United Nations Security Council, was to integrate socio-economic development initiatives into counter-terrorism strategies, aiming for a more comprehensive approach to combating terrorism on the African continent. This integration is seen as essential for long-term solutions to the crisis, addressing the root causes of instability while strengthening regional cooperation.
