ECOWAS Forum Charts Bold Energy Future with Focus on Green Hydrogen and Clean Mobility

The 10th ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Forum (ESEF 2025) wrapped up in Banjul with a strong call for greater regional cooperation to fast-track universal access to affordable and sustainable energy across West Africa. The two day gathering, held in conjunction with ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary and the 15th anniversary of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), drew ministers, energy experts, civil society groups, and development partners. Discussions centered on expanding the regional electricity market, promoting clean mobility, scaling access to clean cooking solutions, and addressing the water, energy, agriculture nexus key areas seen as vital to building resilience in the face of climate change and growing energy demand.

A standout theme was green hydrogen, hailed by participants as a game changing opportunity to transform the sub-region’s energy landscape. Calls were made for pilot projects, innovative financing models, and stronger cross-border collaboration to unlock its potential. The forum concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing innovation in sustainable energy. In closing remarks, ECREEE leadership and Gambian authorities reaffirmed that clean energy is not just an environmental goal but a cornerstone for inclusive economic growth and regional stability.
